Matthew 24

Revelation

Matthew 24:4-51

Matt 24:1-4

Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the templeAnd Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

“Any text out of context is a pretext”

Who is the audience? What where they talking about?  When was this taking place?

The church is not present in this chapter, we are dealing with Israel, and the Lord’s second coming.

THIS IS KEY

Temple- Zech 14, Destroyed 70 Ad, but this is not talking about that, it is still there, in parts, there is a organization ready to rebuild “The temple Institute” Red Heifer, 1997, 2002

24:4-8

And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Rev 6

5– Rev 6:1-2 seal 1

6– Rev 6:3-4 seal 2

7-Rev 6:5-14 Seals 3-6

Beginning– Things are just getting started.

24:9-14

Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Then-This is the half way point in the 7 year tribulation, with verse 8, the first 6 seal judgments are the first 3 ½ years this marks the next 3 ½ years.

2 Thess 2:3-4

This is when the peace treaty with Israel will be broken by the antichrist

You– This is not referring to Believers like many think, this is talking about Jews.  Who is Jesus talking to?  Great misunderstanding with the NT, the church does not appear until the book of Acts, the Gospels are still under the Law of Moses, it is not until the resurrection that we enter the church age, the age of Grace.

betray one another-  saved Jews will turn on each other (we do it today in the church)

false prophets- Rev 13:11-15

love of many-The love of Jesus and the Gospel

shall be saved-This is not spiritual salvation but they will enter the millennium kingdom, physical safety.

gospel of the kingdom – This is different then our current gospel, faith and faith alone is still key but instead of a hope of death and resurrection it is the hope and promise of the Kingdom age, the 1000 year reign of Christ, Rev 7:9-10

in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.- Many missions groups and churches use this as a slogan to raise funds for missions or go on mission trips but this is talking about the tribulation not the church age.

—Verses 4-14 are a brief overview of the entire 7 year tribulation period—

24:15-26

15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. 23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.

abomination of desolation-  2 Thes. 2:4; Rev. 13:14–15, Dan 9:27.   Antichrist prototype 167 BC Antiochus IV (Epiphanes) And when the king had built an idol altar upon God’s altar, he slew swine upon it, and so offered a sacrifice neither according to the law, nor the Jewish religious worship in that country. He also compelled them to forsake the worship which they paid their own God, and to adore those whom he took to be gods; and made them build temples, and raise idol altars in every city and village, and offer swine upon them every day. He also commanded them not to circumcise their sons, and threatened to punish any that should be found to have transgressed his injunction. He also appointed overseers, who should compel them to do what he commanded. And indeed many Jews there were who complied with the king’s commands, either voluntarily, or out of fear of the penalty that was denounced. (Antiquity of the Jews)

Then-The tribulation will be so great that you want to be a doomsday prepper!  The Day of the Lord

but for the elect’s sake-  The time is so bad that if kept going everyone will die, but for the kingdom saints sake the end is not long in coming.

See, I have told you beforehand-tribulations saints should not be fooled with fake Christ’s, (think of David Koresh)

so also will- The Second coming will be grand and spectacular, something that no one can miss or misunderstand.

For- The idea here is that people will be taking advantage of the situation

24:28-31

29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Sign- This is unknown, but all will know what it means

appear in heaven- Everyone on earth will see it

mourn- because they know the judgment day has truly come.

gather together- like the rapture, this will separate the believers from the unbelievers entering in to the 1000 year reign of Christ.

1 Thess 4:13 is during the church age, this is during the tribulation, after the church age, note the differences, they church age saints meet him in the air, the trib saints do not, this is key.
