Romans 1

Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle,  of God separated to the gospel which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scripturesconcerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the fleshand declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

Bondservant- Slave of Jesus, He is owned by Jesus Ex 21:2-6

called to be an apostle- He did not choose this roll, Acts 9:15

separated to the gospel- He has a specific job to do Acts 13:2

Holy Scriptures- The OT—The Jerusalem road

Promise of a savior Genesis 3:15

The Promised one Deuteronomy 18:15,

The virgin birth of Isaiah 7:14,

The suffering Servant  Isaiah 53

The Suffering of the Messiah Zeck 12:10

The Faith not works Ps 2:12

according to the flesh- Mary not Joseph

declared -By his actions not just words

Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His nameamong whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Through Him –Not his doing but Gods

grace and apostleship- Paul is talking about himself and there are 2 possible interpretations,

  1. Grace of salvation and the gift of being an apostle
  2. The grace of being a apostle.
    1. Both work!

all nations for His name –  Paul was a witness to Jesus to the Gentiles not just the Jews

you also- Those in Rome

Vs 7- Typical Paulin greeting.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole worldFor God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers, 10 making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you.

I thank my God- Col, Eph, Pil, Thess, Tim, Philem, all have this same greeting.

Jesus Christ– God saved them and Paul praises God for Gods blessing, (circle)

the whole world-Rome was the center of the world, the center of pagan worship had those who followed Christ was news worthy!

Vs9-10-Paul desperately wants to visit Rome, and is earnestly asking God to allow him to.
