Romans 1:18-32
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.
For-This is connecting verse 18 to 16-17. We have the righteousness of God because the wickedness of man.
wrath of God- The righteous anger of God.
revealed from heaven- The flood, Sodom, Egypt, Israel, the list goes on.
all ungodliness- Lack of reverence towards God
unrighteousness of men- sin, when we do not treat God correctly how and why would we treat his creation correctly.
suppress the truth in unrighteousness- holding down gods truth for the purpose of sin. They don’t want to acknowledge God so they can sin. This is the 1st of 3 reasons for Gods wrath.
may be known of God- the plain common knowledge of God
manifest in them-we do not need to seek it out, it is shown to us.
shown it to them- We see it, regardless if we want to or not.
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.
since the creation of the world – This is what vs 19 is talking about.
invisible attributes are clearly seen- His divine power and nature, who God is.
being understood that are made- His creation, the world around us.
His eternal power and Godhead- Creation speaks all about God.
without excuse- everyone everywhere sees God, we either accept or reject. All nations all over the world have false Gods, they know God, they reject God or accept. Psalm 19:1-6 This is the 2nd reason for Gods wrath, ignoring his natural revelation.
although they knew God-They did not have a relationship with God but they understood the concept of God.
did not glorify Him as God nor were thankful – This is how we should respond to God but they did not
became futile in their thoughts- Worthless- Eph 4:17
foolish hearts were darkened- With constant rejection of truth they no longer recognized truth at all
Professing to be wise became fools – They could not know truth because they rejected it and in time they though they were wise but in reality were fools
changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like- They worship the created not the creator. This is the 3rd reason for Gods wrath, they degraded Gods Glory. 24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,
