Romans 6:1-11

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

1-2 this is a rhetorical question, the idea is that more sin = more grace, and do we not all want more grace? He answers this with a very strong NO.

died to sin- separated, no longer together.

in it- If we are separated from sin, how can we continue to be in it?

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His deathTherefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptized- spiritual baptism is being referred to here, we understand this because later he talks of us being buried, we are put, aligned with.

Death- the death of Christ, when our sins were paid for.

buried with Him through baptism into death– our sinful self is laid to rest.

Walk in newness of life- we walk with the freedom from sin, we are no longer tethered to sin.

For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrectionknowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sinFor he who has died has been freed from sin

likeness of His resurrection- Perfect.

knowing this-Therefore!

old man- Sinful self

should no longer be slaves of sin- bound to sins rules, and consequences.

been freed from sin- This can and should be translated had been declared righteous.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Himknowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God11 Likewise you also, [c]reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

8-11 is a rehash of 5-7!

also live with Him- We cannot have one without the other, if we are dead with Him, He is alive and so are we.

has dominion over Him- Christ has defeated Death, death is no longer eternal for those whoa re with Christ.

He died to sin once for all-  Christ is not dying over and over again, it was a one time event.

He lives to God- we live because and for God.
