Romans 8:26-39

Rom 8:26-39

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Likewise-This is talking about groaning, the creation groans and so does our spirit

Weaknesses- Our spiritual weaknesses

should pray for as we ought- There are times that we do not know the trouble we might be getting into or what we really need.  We walk by faith 2 cor 5:7

groanings which cannot be uttered- This is not a spoken language, this is the spirit praying for us, not us praying with the voice of the spirit

according to the will of God- Because the HS is the one praying He will be only praying for what God wants for us!

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

The sentence structure in Greek is better

We know that those who love God all things work together for good.

This does not mean all will be rainbow and sunshine, nothing

If God gave us his son, no acts of evil can thwart what God is doing in us, making us more like him.

29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

He foreknew-  This is an intimate relationship before the foundation of the world

also predestined-We as believers will be made into the image of God, no matter what happens in our lives God will use it for good, that good is to me more like him.

30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

-we respond, he justifies, he glorifies.  WE first must respond.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For Your sake we are killed all day long;

We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What then shall we say to these things?  When we realize 26-30 we stand in amazement.

He asks 6 questions to drive home this point

  1. If God is for us, who can be against us?  We have foes but they have nothing on us!
  2. how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?  God did not spare his son, all we have to do is ask’
  3. Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? The accusations are real and true but we have been justified so they hold no weight.
  4. Who is he who condemns- Christ is the one who condemns but it is he who also justified us!
  5. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ- This is his love for the believers.  The things that might separate us grow in intensity and Paul makes it clear that we will face persecution.  But that even that God is with us.  Ps 44:22
  6. Shall- here paul lists all that might separate us for God
